June 6, 1944: D-Day, The Invasion of Normandy

On this day in 1944, Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. More than 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops and 30,000 vehicles landed along a 50-mile stretch of fortified French coastline. The Battle of Normandy, known as "Operation Overlord," lasted from June 1944 to August 1944 and aided in ending World War II in Europe.

The wake of the Powerhouse fire

With the flames 60% contained, the worst of the Powerhouse fire may be over. The wildfire has run rampant since Thursday, putting the abilities of more than 2,000 firefighters to the test, and scorching 32,032 acres.

Several evacuations near the fire have been called off, and officials are confident the blaze will soon be entirely under control.

Said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Tony Akins:

"We're cautiously optimistic that if the conditions continue, we'll be able to see containment early next week."

In Focus: The Terrible Beauty of California's Powerhouse Fire.

The harrowing, expansive fire, captured in such shocking fashion above, began as a wildfire sparked last Thursday, near a hydroelectric plant in the Angeles National Forest. The uncontrolled, wind-aided blaze ultimately destroyed six homes in Lake Hughes, California, with yet more damaged, and prompted thousands of evacuations. The above images are as compelling an example of an intersection of artistry and terror as we've come across.

Protestors clash with riot police near PM's office, between Taksim and Besiktas in Istanbul, on June 3, 2013, during a demonstration against the demolition of the park. Turkish police on June 1 began pulling out of Istanbul's iconic Taksim Square, after a second day of violent clashes between protesters and police over a controversial development project. Thousands of demonstrators flooded the site as police lifted the barricades around the park and began withdrawing from the square. What started as an outcry against a local development project has snowballed into widespread anger against what critics say is the government's increasingly conservative and authoritarian agenda.

In Turkey, thousands of protesters clash with riot police for second day in fiercest anti-government demonstrations for years.

This is a surge of protest unique against the backdrop of the  "Arab Spring" uprisings of recent years — Turkey's democratic functions are more robust than could have been said of Mubarak's Egypt or Gaddafi's Libya, to be sure, but the police clashes, arrests and hard pushback from the government of Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as such things often do, have given way to a violent discord within the nation.
